“Fishers- Cryptic Forest Carnivores” Program

What a great program on Fishers!

Fishers are rarely, if ever, seen by hikers walking through the woods. The public generally knows very little about these shy creatures. Dr. Michael Joyce, Wildlife Ecologist at the Natural Resources Research Institute in Duluth, shared information on the long-term research being done at the Institute to determine why fisher numbers are decreasing. His research group is testing the hypothesis that fishers lack adequate nesting cavities. He has offered to give the FNPCW some extra nest boxes he has on hand that we can mount in our forest. We hope to have Joyce back in the future to share the results of the continuing research into these interesting forest dwellers.

Dr. Joyce will return on Wednesday, July 24th at 2 pm, for his presentation on Northern Flying Squirrels – Forest Gliders. Flying squirrels are important members of the forest communities throughout our region. The warming climate is allowing the Northern subspecies to be displaced by their Southern relatives. Joyce will discuss flying squirrel ecology and ongoing research on flying squirrel distribution, competition, and displacement of the northern squirrels.
