Tree Planting Spring 2023
Long-term forest management project at Beaver Hollow will begin in May!
The Friends’ organization worked with a certified forester to complete a comprehensive, long-range management plan in 2021. This past year, the Friends collaborated with the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS) to develop science-based climate adaptation strategies to incorporate into our existing forest management plan. Actions are recommended that will either enhance the resilience of various habitats as the climate warms over this century, or transition forest habitats to species that will fare well in that warming climate.
We will begin a long-term transition of our black ash dominated forests this spring, adding tree species that are recommended for a warming climate. As black ash trees die from emerald ash borer (EAB) infestation, the young trees we plant now will gradually replace them. We will be planting red oak, bur oak, swamp white oak, black cherry, and hackberry plugs or bare root stock over the weekend of May 12-14. We welcome volunteers to assist with this planting project in the spring. We will add more details about the project as we get closer to May.
