Outdoor Education Center Intern Position
  June – August 2022

Job Title: Outdoor Education Center Intern
Location: Beaver Hollow Outdoor Education Area, Bayfield, Wisconsin
Application Deadline: February 25, 2022
Internship Period: 12 weeks beginning June 7, 2022, and ending August 27, 2022.
Salary: $17/hour.
Hours: Paid internship for 32 hours/week, Monday – Thursday, 9am – 5pm. Schedule adjustments/modifications by mutual agreement. Interns will not work in inclement weather.

POSITION DESCIPTION:

The Friends of the North Pikes Creek Wetlands (FNPCW) is a community-driven, conservation organization committed to the protection of the sensitive North Pikes Creek wetlands headwaters and its concomitant plant and wildlife species in perpetuity, to the scientific management of the wetland property, and to the responsible use of this property for the educational and nature-based recreational benefit of the community. The FNPCW exists for the benefit of the environment and the people in the community.

The FNPCW is using a portion of their conservation property to create a fully ADA-compliant outdoor education area, Beaver Hollow, which offers visitors of all ages and physical abilities a unique, close to home nature experience. The intern will gain experience in developing and maintaining an outdoor education center, participating in natural resource service projects, and educational outreach to the public.

Specifically, the intern will:

  • Work with volunteers to build a 320’ extension to the existing 728’ ADA-compliant boardwalk through a forested wetland. Completion of this critical infrastructure is an FNPCW priority.
  • Have the opportunity to engage in various natural resource service projects, such as selecting, marking, and clearing trail through upland forest habitat, invasive plant removal, wildlife and avian monitoring, and a forestry seed tree project with the guidance of FNPCW’s forester.
  • Live trap problem beaver on the Red Cliff reservation and move to Beaver Hollow to re-populate a vacant lodge.
  • Have the opportunity to engage in educational outreach to the public, such as planning and leading presentations and interpretive tours for visitors of all ages on a wide range of topics.
  • Engage with WDNR, USFS, and Red Cliff Natural Resources professionals.
  • Regularly interface with visitors, answer questions, and provide information about Beaver Hollow and the associated flora and fauna.
  • Assist in managing the conservation property and Beaver Hollow, including regular property and infrastructure upkeep, installation of signage, native plantings, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS AND DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
  • Have the ability to work both as a team member, and independently.
  • Possess the mechanical aptitude to assemble a modular boardwalk system (custommfginc.com).
  • Proficient in the safe use of hand tools.
  • Possess interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, and an interest in conservation

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work will be performed outdoors and sometimes in wetland areas. Intern will need their own transportation to and from the Beaver Hollow Outdoor Education Area, and must be able to lift/carry up to 50 lbs. The FNPCW will supply knee boots and/or hip boots for use in wet areas, plus any other required specialized equipment.
