Bayfield 4th grade Snowshoes at Beaver Hollow
On a prefect day in early March, Bayfield Schools’ 4th grade students, teachers, and staff, visited Beaver Hollow for a snowshoe trip through the wetlands. Steve Ballou, Interpretive Ranger from the Apostle Island National Lakeshore, led the students on an adventure through a marsh and forested wetland. Students discovered a variety of animal tracks – some leading out from under the boardwalk where the animals had spent the night – a beaver lodge covered with snow, many bird nests that are visible with the leaves off the trees, and the empty nests of the heron rookery.
Thanks to a generous donation from the Bayfield Community Education Foundation, the Friends were able to supplement their snowshoe collection, and can now outfit an entire grade of students in snowshoes, from kindergarten through middle school age!
Snow conditions were very good this year and many hundreds of visitors, including families, took advantage of the good snowpack and visited Beaver Hollow. The snow has now deteriorated, so you will have to wait until next season to snowshoe at Beaver Hollow. The Friends’ snowshoes are available for loan to students and families to use at Beaver Hollow. To borrow snowshoes next winter, contact us at info@northpikescreek.org in advance of your trip.
