Fishers are rarely, if ever, seen by hikers walking through the woods. The public generally knows very little about these shy creatures. Dr. Michael Joyce, Wildlife Ecologist at the Natural Resources Research Institute in Duluth, shared information on the long-term research being done at the Institute on Fishers.
Protect. Enhance. Educate.
The Friends have been busy as beavers over the past decade, and are pleased to announce that our goal of creating an accessible outdoor educational venue in the wetlands has been realized! To reach this objective, the Friends began by facilitating the permanent protection of 410 acres of sensitive wetland property in the North Pikes Creek watershed, 130 acres to which the Friends hold title.
Since 2019, the Friends have worked diligently to create Beaver Hollow – a one-of-a-kind, fully ADA-compliant, outdoor education and recreation facility that serves everyone in our region. The 2021 building season saw a number of enhancements completed at Beaver Hollow: the addition of a toilet facility located near the pavilion, electricity brought into the property, the electrification of the pavilion, and the installation by Bayfield Wireless of a WiFi hotspot.
The Friends’ ongoing efforts to educate the public about forests and wetlands in the ecosystem were recently assisted with a generous grant from the Fund for the Environment of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, which funded the purchase of audio-visual equipment for Beaver Hollow. Presentations in the pavilion can now be displayed on a large, flat screen TV that has the capability to display a high-quality image for outdoor presentations even during bright conditions. The Beaver Hollow pavilion is now fully equipped to host a variety of educational presentations!
The Friends are eager to arrange informative and thought-provoking programs at Beaver Hollow this coming season. You can help us by suggesting topics you’d like to hear more about, or volunteering to present a program or lead a tour.
