SUMMARY:The Magic of Migration: Experience the Great Sandhill Crane Migration on the Platte River\, Nebraska
DESCRIPTION:Join Ryan Michalesko of the International Crane Foundation (ICF) on Thursday August 7\, at 2 pm\, to learn more about Sandhill Cranes’ incredible migration and the importance of this vital riparian habitat in Nebraska.  Each spring\, over one million Sandhill Cranes and a handful of Endangered Whooping Cranes congregate on a tiny stretch of the Platte River in Nebraska as they migrate north. As the wintering cranes from the Southwest U.S. and Mexico move north on a migration path shaped like an hour glass\, they converge upon a 70-mile stretch of river before fanning out again to continue on to their breeding grounds as far as Canada\, Alaska\, and even Siberia. The Platte River is a unique ecosystem that provides an important stopover site to rest and refuel on their journey\, which can be thousands of miles. \nMichalesko\, who is a professional photographer\, will share photos and videos from the ‘Platte’. He’ll also provide tips on planning your own trip to witness this truly unforgettable natural phenomenon. \nRegistration is recommended\, but not required. \nREGISTER\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X

SUMMARY:"Weird Things in the Neighborhood" with Rick Burkman
DESCRIPTION:The Chequamegon Bay area has been host to some strange and exotic wild birds in recent years\, some traveling over oceans\, icebergs\, and continents to reach us. Join us on Thursday\, July 16th as Rick Burkman discusses these visitors\, where they came from\, why they are here\, and how you may be the one to discover the next weird species in your neighborhood! \nRick is a sometimes writer who became fascinated with birds when he was 5 years old. In the past 25 years he has indulged his fantasy by writing over 100 articles about birds and the natural world for local\, regional\, and national publications. Along the way he has been lucky enough to follow researchers into mosquito infested swamps\, trudge through thigh deep snow with windchills in the double digits below zero\, and watch lots and lots of birds from his office window. \nRegistration for this program helps with planning\, but is not required.

SUMMARY:Wetlands\, Water Quality\, and Nature Based Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, August 13 at 2 pm\, as Cortney Dean talks about the many ways beavers impact habitats\, ecosystems\, food webs\, water quality\, and threatened species in Wisconsin. Understanding how beaver work\, how they modify ecosystems\, and what other species can benefit from their activity can help us reframe beavers as conservation and restoration partners rather than chaotic adversaries. She will share data from her own research\, highlights from studies across the globe\, and discuss the challenges facing beavers and nature-based restoration practices here in Wisconsin. \nCortney is a researcher and science communicator located near Menomonie\, Wisconsin. She received her master’s at UW-Stout in Conservation Biology and her thesis research was on beaver impacts to bats\, birds\, and water quality on trout streams. She is currently researching beaver impacts to trout movement and how beaver ponds impact organic matter in wetland soils. She is passionate about bridging the gap between current research and public knowledge. \nRegistration helps with program planning\, but is not required.
