SUMMARY:The Magic of Migration: Experience the Great Sandhill Crane Migration on the Platte River\, Nebraska
DESCRIPTION:Join Ryan Michalesko of the International Crane Foundation (ICF) on Thursday August 7\, at 2 pm\, to learn more about Sandhill Cranes’ incredible migration and the importance of this vital riparian habitat in Nebraska.  Each spring\, over one million Sandhill Cranes and a handful of Endangered Whooping Cranes congregate on a tiny stretch of the Platte River in Nebraska as they migrate north. As the wintering cranes from the Southwest U.S. and Mexico move north on a migration path shaped like an hour glass\, they converge upon a 70-mile stretch of river before fanning out again to continue on to their breeding grounds as far as Canada\, Alaska\, and even Siberia. The Platte River is a unique ecosystem that provides an important stopover site to rest and refuel on their journey\, which can be thousands of miles. \nMichalesko\, who is a professional photographer\, will share photos and videos from the ‘Platte’. He’ll also provide tips on planning your own trip to witness this truly unforgettable natural phenomenon. \nRegistration is recommended\, but not required. \nREGISTER\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X

SUMMARY:Beaver vs. Trout: Casting Light on a Century-Old Controversy
DESCRIPTION:Since the early 1900s—and likely even earlier—the relationship between beaver and trout has been a topic of heated debate. Some anglers see beaver as the ultimate culprit\, degrading once-pristine fishing waters\, while others argue that beaver ponds create ideal conditions for exceptional trout fishing. In this presentation\, Katti Renik\, Trout Unlimited Great Lakes Project Coordinator\, will explore the historical context of beaver–salmonid interactions in the western Great Lakes region\, review key findings from published studies on this complex relationship\, and share results from her master’s thesis\, which examined how beaver influence brook trout habitat in Lake Superior tributaries along Minnesota’s North Shore. \nJoin us at Beaver Hollow on Thursday\, July 31 at 10 am\, as Katti Renik sheds light on this century-old controversy. Katti spent her formative years living on a trout hatchery in western Nebraska. She went on to study fisheries at the University of Wyoming\, and later earned a graduate degree at Bemidji State University.  Her career in fisheries has taken her to incredible places and allowed her to work with a wide range of partners and organizations.  These days\, you’ll find Katti outdoors with her husband  Joe\, their adventurous daughter Eve\, and  two dogs\, Leinie and Kugel. \nRegistration helps with program planning\, but is not required.

SUMMARY:History and Ecology of American Martens
DESCRIPTION:Michael Joyce will return to Beaver Hollow on Wednesday\, July 23rd\, to present a program on American Martens at 2 pm in the pavilion. American martens are a cryptic forest carnivore in the weasel family native to the Western Great Lakes Region. Martens are ecologically and culturally important species in the region and beyond. This presentation will focus on the history and current status of martens across the Western Great Lakes Region and highlight recent research aimed at understanding their ecology and population status in Minnesota. \nJoyce is a wildlife ecologist working at the Natural Resources Research Institute in Duluth. He has been studying wildlife in northern Minnesota over the last 12 years. His research focuses broadly on wildlife ecology\, conservation\, and management\, with an emphasis on understanding the effects of human activities on wildlife populations and communities. Several of Michael’s projects have focused on American martens and fishers. \nRegistration helps with program planning\, but is not required.

SUMMARY:Beavers: Ecosystem Services and Scientific Management
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, July 10th at Beaver Hollow\, as Bob Boucher discusses beavers’ critical role as structural engineers who benefit watersheds\, and the need to manage their population accurately using the best available science. By focusing on watersheds\, wildlife managers can ensure that environmental conservation efforts are comprehensive and cohesive\, addressing the needs of various species within the same ecological corridor. \nBob Boucher serves as the President of the Superior Bio-Conservancy and  as an advisor to the Beaver Institute. He also founded Milwaukee Riverkeepers and served as Executive Director of Wisconsin’s oldest land trust\, The Cedar Lakes Conservation Foundation. He has an MS in Water Resource Management from UW Madison with an emphasis in ecosystem management of watersheds. His interests include protecting and restoring keystone species in ecosystems and bioregional landscape linkages for protection on a global scale. Bob became a “Beaver Believer” when he realized the role this keystone species plays in the health of our river’s hydrology and their significance to biodiversity. \nWatch a similar presentation Bob made at the Midwest Beaver Summit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5Q4BJdOBK0.

SUMMARY:A Year at a Beaver Pond with Al Cornell
DESCRIPTION:You won’t want to miss this Wednesday\, August 14th presentation with astute observations and superb photography by Al Cornell. Cornell\, recently retired from the DNR\, lives in the driftless area of Wisconsin. One day he noted a newly created beaver pond near his home. He set up a blind at the edge of the pond on a bright spring day to photograph the eagle he had seen hunting the area. He relates that this photo session grew into an obsession\, and he subsequently spent a year visiting the blind and documenting a year in the life of the beaver pond. During that time\, Cornell observed 61 species of birds and nine species of mammals\, as well as numerous fish\, insects\, and toads that were drawn to that small beaver pond. He went on to publish “A Year at a Beaver Pond: Observations from One Little Dynamic Ecosystem\,” a book with exquisite photography and insightful text. \nRegister today for this Wednesday\, August 14th\, opportunity to hear Al Cornell speak about his experience and to see his delightful photos documenting a year at a beaver pond! SUMMARY:Saving Cranes and the Places Where They Dance
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Beaver Hollow on Thursday August 8\, at 2 pm\, to hear Ryan Michalesko of the International Crane Foundation (ICF) talk about Wisconsin’s Sandhill and Whooping Cranes\, the importance of Wisconsin wetlands to the species\, conservation policy\, and the human-wildlife conflict that occurs in communities where these birds are found. Ryan will discuss ICF’s work here in Wisconsin and worldwide. The story of the Sandhill Crane\, Grus canadensis\, is one of true conservation success. The species – one of the oldest on the planet – was nearly extirpated in the Midwest. Sandhill Cranes are now thriving due to a mix of factors\, including better wetland protection and management and their shift to agricultural crops after losing their natural grassland habitat.  \nRyan Michalesko works on the North American Program team at the International Crane Foundation. With a footprint in over 50 countries on the five continents where cranes exist\, the foundation works worldwide to conserve cranes and the ecosystems\, watersheds\, and flyways on which they depend. He has a bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Planning and a master’s degree in Natural Resource Policy from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

SUMMARY:Northern Flying Squirrels - Forest Gliders
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, July 24th\, Michael Joyce will present “Northern Flying Squirrels – Forest Gliders” at 2 pm at the Beaver Hollow pavilion. Climate change is altering the distribution of many animal species\, creating new zones of overlap between species that historically did not coexist. Flying squirrels are important members of our forest communities throughout the Western Great Lakes Region. In the much of eastern North America\, climate change is allowing southern flying squirrels to move north into areas that were previously solely occupied by northern flying squirrels\, leading in some places to increased competition and displacement of northern flying squirrels. In this presentation\, Joyce will discuss flying squirrel ecology and ongoing research on flying squirrel distribution\, nest site selection\, and parasites in Minnesota. \nMichael Joyce is a wildlife ecologist working at the Natural Resources Research Institute in Duluth. He has been studying wildlife in northern Minnesota over the last 12 years. His research focuses broadly on wildlife ecology\, conservation\, and management\, with an emphasis on understanding the effects of human activities on wildlife populations and communities. Join us on July 24th to hear about these fascinating gliders. \nRegistration is recommended\, but not required. \nREGISTER HERE\nShare this:\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X

SUMMARY:Fishers - Cryptic Forest Carnivores
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, July 10th\, Michael Joyce will present “Fishers – Cryptic Forest Carnivores” at 2 pm at the Beaver Hollow pavilion. Fishers are a member of the weasel family and native to the Western Great Lakes Region. In Minnesota\, the core population of fishers has declined by 50% over the last 20 years. During the same time\, fishers have expanded their range\, moving into southern Minnesota including the greater Twin Cities Metro area. Joyce will discuss a general history of fishers\, highlight factors contributing to their recent decline\, and describe ongoing research to better understand fisher ecology. \nMichael Joyce is a wildlife ecologist working at the Natural Resources Research Institute in Duluth.
